Spring Break begins this Saturday, and there is no need to plan an elaborate vacation when you have this many discounts, deals, and special activities scheduled across Long Island.  Plan your staycation so that you have an activity that appeals to each member of your family, and keep the kids busy with these free or inexpensive trip ideas, and discount deals that are only available for spring break:

Museums and Educational Fun
For spring break, the Long Island Rail Road will be offering discount New York City getaway packages, which include train fare and a visit to one of the city’s most thrilling museums. Deals are available for discount tickets for the American Museum of Natural History and the Rose Center, the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, Madame Tussaud’s, and Ripley’s Believe It or Not.  Click here for more information.

If you are looking for museums within driving distance, take a ride to Museum Row in Nassau County to see great family-friendly museums such as the Cradle of Aviation and the Long Island Children’s Museum.  Suffolk County also has much to offer, including the Maritime Explorium in Port Jefferson, which features hands-on interactive exhibits.  For the break, the focus at the Explorium will be Constructing Contraptions, in which children will build catapults and make “seed bombs” using native seeds that they can launch from their catapult to create their own native plant garden at home.  Those looking to stay in Suffolk can also take a ride to the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center in Riverhead to learn about sea creatures and even see some perform.

Get in Touch with Nature
If you are looking to enjoy the spring weather by getting outside, take a trip to Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown, where you can walk around the acres of property and see the large variety of animals that are housed on the property, such as owls, hawks, turtles, goats, and rabbits.  There will also be exciting events planned for the break at Garvies Point Museum and Preserve in Glen Cove. Two special events are planned for each day from Tuesday to Saturday during spring break, including exciting live animal presentations, bird walks, birdhouse building, and mosaic crafts.  Click here to learn more about the Garvies Point Museum and Preserve programs.

You can also get in touch with nature this spring break by going fishing.  There are many different charter boat companies around the Island that are willing to take you away for a few hours to land your next big catch.

Have a Ball
Now that baseball season has started, a staycation is the perfect time to grab tickets to the game and head down to Citi Field or Yankee Stadium to see your favorite team.  The Mets will be at home April 18th until the 21st (if you are also off for the Monday after Easter).  The Yankees will be home April 12th and 13th, as well as the 15th and 16th.

If your idea of having a ball involves a golf club and cart, you can also get away from it all by exploring Long Island’s great golf courses, including Bethpage State Park and Sunken Meadow State Park golf courses.
