The hamlet and CDP of Huntington is located within the larger town of the same name. It is commonly referred to by residents as Huntington Village, though it is not incorporated and lacks a village government. When first established by English settlers during the 17th century, the hamlet saw most of its buildings and homes constructed along what is now Park Avenue. Business began to move westward as time progressed, however, and today’s Route 25A became the new center of activity in the 19th century.
The route remains Main Street for the village and, alongside the surrounding roads, provides a thriving 36-square-block business district for the area. A large volume of popular and highly regarded restaurants make it a popular destination for residents and visitors alike. Throughout the year, a number of parades and celebrations are also held on Main Street, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, Columbus Day, the winter holidays, and more. Huntington Village was the birthplace of singer Mariah Carey, actor Ralph Macchio, pioneering aeronautical engineer Leroy Grumman, and world renowned poet Walt Whitman.
As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a total population of 18,046 with 7,170 households and an average size of 3 people per home. The median household was $110,988 with males making $90,135 and females $60,430.
