January is National Blood Drive Month: Give the Generous Gift of Life This 2015
Donating blood is a safe, satisfying way to give back to those who need it most this year. Blood donations save lives and give the opportunity of life back to millions of Americans around the country who need blood transfusions after fatal accidents, surgeries, and because of disease.
Red blood cells only have a shelf life of 42 days, so they must be constantly replenished to maintain an adequate supply for patients. While donors of all 8 blood types are necessary, those with O negative, A negative and B negative blood types are especially needed at this time.
You must be at least 17 years old, in good health, and weight at least 110 pounds to be eligible to donate blood. If you, or someone you know, is 16 years old and would like to donate blood, then you’ll need written consent from a parent or legal guardian. Here is a link to the New York Blood Center Parental Permission Form for 16 Year Old Donors.
Please remember, you must wait at least eight weeks between donations of whole blood and 16 weeks between double red cell donations. Platelet apheresis donors may give every 7 days up to 24 times per year. Regulations are different for those giving blood for themselves (autologous donors).
