On Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 6:30 pm, parties will be kicking off all across the Island when the New York Giants and the New England Patriots face off at Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis, Indiana. 1pm to 5pm
Join the Long Island Poetry Collective at the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site and Interpretive Center at a championship event geared toward those of all ages who may want to celebrate the idea of competition, but with an alternative to watching football. The afternoon begins with an five-minute open mic “warm up” opportunity for all poets in attendance, whether competing or not. Contestants will then be allowed three minutes during the slam to perform works of their own or others. There will be raffle prizes; and along with a monetary prize, the coveted Golden Football will be awarded for the best original slam performance! Heroes and drinks will also be provided to keep the ‘Super Bowl’ feeling alive for the event. The audience will also have a chance to be involved as judges, or cheer with the LIPC Cheerleaders at the half time show!
$10 requested donation ($7 for LIPC members), which includes food and beverages. For additional information call: 631-427-5240 ext 112, or email events@waltwhitman.org.
And for those of you who will be celebrating at home, here are some
Super Bowl party ideas to help you score big on a budget:
Easy Super Bowl Food:
For any party, it’ all about preparation: A great game strategy is to make a simple buffet ahead of time so you won’t miss any of the action. Keep hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs, wings, and sausage and peppers hot in chafing dishes throughout the game. Serve chips, dip and other easy-to-prepare finger foods when guests arrive.
Keep beverages cool from touchdown to touchdown with the Football Inflatable Cooler ($14.99) from Target.
Party City’s Super Bowl Super Party Kit for 16 ($29.99 internet only) includes plates, napkins, cups, forks, a table cover, a football platter, a chip and dip tray and a Super Bowl XLVI pennant banner.
Party Fan Wear:
Party City has everything you need to cheer on the winning team and is offering 20% off on any $75 order with a football item: Send team logo buttons or tattoos with your Super Bowl party invitations. When your guests arrive, hand out party fan gear and get your game faces on: Pom-poms ($2.99 each), megaphones ($2.49 each) and cowbells are great for cheering on the winning team—and check out the football hat ($14.99) and blue face paint stick (.99)! Beaded football necklaces (.99) and football favors ($5.99 for 12) can double as table decorations.
Super Bowl Party Game Ideas:
Football Pool
Make your Super Bowl party even more fun with a game of Football Pool ($4.99), available at Party City. Players fill their squares with their names before the game starts. Be sure to have the team names on the top and side of the game poster. Then let the game begin! After each quarter, find the square that matches up to that quarter’s score. The player whose name is in that square is the winner for that quarter . . . and don’t forget the prizes!
Beer Pong
The Beer Pong Party Game ($7.99), available at Party City, is all about getting the ball in the right cup. The game comes with everything you need to keep the party going right through halftime, including ideas for different ways to play.
Inflatable Goal Post Ring Toss Game
Become the most popular prop at the party. Inflatable Goal Post Ring Toss Game from Party City ($7.99) features a football-shaped hat with a goal post on top. Contestants score by ringing one of the inflatable circles on a post. Rings have different point values!
