Lindenhurst Man Charged in Amityville Bank Robbery

Suffolk County police have arrested Thomas Weber, 28, of Lindenhurst, in connection with a bank robbery at Suffolk County National Bank in Amityville on Monday. Weber allegedly entered the bank at approximately 2:15pm on January 30 and handed the teller a note demanding cash and threatening the use of a gun.  The teller complied and Weber fled on foot. Weber was arrested on Tuesday and was charged with one count of robbery third degree. He will be arraigned today, February 1, at the First District Court in Central Islip.

Wrong-Way Driver Caught on Sunken Meadow Parkway

Walter Tortora, 35, of New Hyde Park, was arrested early Sunday when police stopped him as he was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of the Sunken Meadow Parkway near Kings Park. Troopers responded to call of a wrong-way driver on the parkway around 1:45am. At the scene they found a Tortora in a gray Mini-Cooper heading in the wrong direction and pulled him over between Pulaski Road and Jericho Turnpike. He was incoherent with slurred speech and bloodshot, watery eyes. Tortora admitted to having smoked marijuana and taken Valium earlier that evening and was found with four Valium pills on his person. He is charged with driving with ability-impaired by drugs, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and several traffic violations.

Thief Stabs Guard in the Face in Garden City Store

After trying on a pair of sneakers at Burlington Coat Factory in East Garden City a suspect attempted to walk out of the store around 2:40pm with the shoes still on his feet. A store security guard tried to stop the man from stealing the shoes but was stabbed in the face by the suspect. The suspect fled the scene on foot and the victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The suspect is described as a black man, about 22 to 25 years old, 5’10” to 6-feet tall with a medium build. He was reported wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and black Phatfarm sneakers – the very pair that had been stolen.

Not Guilty Plea in Drugged Driving Case

Steven Kinalis has been accused of aggravated vehicular homicide after he rear-ended a pickup truck last month, killed a 5-year-old occupant of the vehicle. Kinalis entered a plea of not guilty Tuesday in Riverhead’s Suffolk County Court. His bail has been raised from $300,000 to $400,000.
