Tax season is here and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program offers free tax help for low- to moderate-income (generally $55,000 and below) individuals and families. Bilingual tax assistance is available. The service is provided by IRS-certified volunteers.

Bethpage Federal Credit Union will offer a virtual VITA service to assist taxpayers. For more information and to apply, visit its website or contact Community Development at community@bethpagefcu.com or (516) 349-4288.

The AARP Foundation “Tax-Aide” program offers free, individualized tax preparation for low-to moderate-income taxpayers - especially those 50 and older. To find a location, visit the AARP website. You can also prepare your own taxes online and request help from a volunteer counselor to coach you through the process using your own computer while screen-sharing. In addition, Tax-Aide provides taxpayers with access to free software to prepare taxes totally on their own.

The Health & Welfare Council of Long Island offers a “Virtual VITA” program to connect a taxpayer with an off-site tax preparer. HWCLI staff scans tax documents and tax returns are completed over the phone. Call (516) 505-4430 for information or to schedule an appointment.
