Weather Alert

AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO MIDNIGHT EDT THURSDAY NIGHT The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam. from midnight tonight to midnight EDT Thursday night. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Fine Particulates. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. The toll free number is 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.

Science-A-Peel, Inc., a 501c3 public charity is pleased to announce that it will be presenting The Great Greenlawn Sciencebed Race and Parade to promote science. Lisa O'Keefe, President of Science-A-Peel, Inc. said "from our weekly television shows, Science-A-Peel, Inc. has determined that the next great way to excite the public about science is to hold a parade/race to make them aware of the great resources available. To that end we are holding "The Great Greenlawn Sciencebed Race and Parade 2011" in Greenlawn on Sunday, May 1st.

Everyone in the community is welcome to participate in the parade. Applications are available on bedrace.intuitwebsites.com. There are openings for not only marchers but for those who wish to build a science themed float or a three person science bed team. Science beds are easy and inexpensive to make with instructions being found on the bedrace.intuitwebsites.com site under the "parade apps" tab. There will be $1000 in cash awards, trophies, and product prizes such as Boe Bot Robot Kit and a Scribbler 2 from Parallax, several science kits from SmartLab Toys, 2 general admission tickets to Atlantis Marine World, a blue flight suit from U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Alabama and a $25 gift certificate to The Cheesecake Factory in Huntington, NY. There are also great free giveaways and educational tools for the spectators including mouse pads and key chains courtesy of Physics Today magazines, magazines from Astronomy, Horticulture magazines, color and activity books from various government agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency and much more.
For those of you who wish to donate to this event you can click on the "fundraising" link on bedrace.intuitwebsites.com or go to greenlawnbedrace.com and donate directly through this secured online site.

The Great Greenlawn Sciencebed Race and Parade will be a significant campaign to educate the public on the various branches of science while making them active learners in a fun filled family environment. Everyone feels at home at a parade. A parade, has that unique aura that is special in itself and more open than science competitions or fairs. We are hoping this is a single step in exciting the enthusiasm for school age children. And also open the minds of parents and the community at large that everyone has a role in science. This thought coincides with the NYS Department of Education's Science Initiative that is calling on the community to become involved in science. NYS Department of Education has been seeking innovative ideas such as this to raise the awareness in the community.
