Quick-Thinking Bank Teller Foils Identity Theft Attempt in North New Hyde Park, Suspect Arrested

Phillippe Berkowitz was arrested for attempting to withdraw money with a fraudulent ID from a North New Hyde Park bank, facing multiple felony charges.

The Third Squad reports the arrest of an undomiciled man for an incident that occurred on Friday, February 9, 2024 at 4:30 pm in North New Hyde Park.
 
According to Detectives, a male victim, 60, noticed multiple unauthorized withdrawals from his Bethpage Federal Credit Union account on Monday, February 5, 2024 and contacted the bank. The bank immediately flagged his victim’s account.
 
Defendant Phillippe Berkowitz, 61, entered the Bethpage Federal Credit Union located at 2055 Hillside Avenue and attempted to withdraw money out of the victims account using fraudulent ID. The bank teller immediately notified police and the defendant was placed under arrest without incident.
 
Defendant Berkowitz is charged with 2 counts of Grand Larceny 3rd Degree, Attempted Grand Larceny 3 rd Degree, 2 counts of Identity Theft 1st Degree, Attempted Identity Theft and Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument.
 
He will be arraigned on Saturday, February 10, 2024 in First District Court, 99 Main Street
Hempstead.
