A group of Long Island middle school students fell ill Monday morning after allegedly consuming marijuana-infused gummies, prompting emergency responses and hospital evaluations, according to Suffolk County police and school officials.
Authorities responded to William Floyd Middle School on Moriches Middle Island Road shortly after 10 a.m., where they found 12 students, ages 13 and 14, experiencing adverse effects from ingesting the THC-laced gummies.
While one student was released to a parent, the remaining 11 were transported to local hospitals as a precautionary measure. Officials did not provide details on the specific symptoms the students exhibited.
Preliminary reports suggest that one student distributed the edibles to their classmates. However, police have confirmed that no criminal charges will be filed, and disciplinary actions will be handled internally by the school administration.
In a statement, school officials expressed their gratitude to first responders for their swift action and emphasized their concern for the students' well-being. "We are thankful that the affected children are receiving medical attention and are hopeful for their quick recovery," they said.
This incident underscores the growing concern over THC-infused edibles in schools, as their packaging and taste often resemble regular candy, making them easy for young students to consume without fully understanding the effects. Parents and educators are urged to discuss the dangers of unregulated substances with their children and remain vigilant in monitoring their behavior.
