Drunk Driver Arrested After Sideswiping Police Car, Fleeing Scene on Sunrise Highway

Suffolk County Police arrested Cristian Sanchez, 25, for aggravated DWI and leaving the scene after sideswiping a police vehicle on Sunrise Highway in Yaphank.

Suffolk County Police last night arrested a man for driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident involving a police  vehicle on the eastbound Sunrise Highway in Yaphank.

A police officer driving a marked highway patrol vehicle eastbound in the right lane of Sunrise Highway, approaching Exit 57, was struck by a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe that sideswiped the police vehicle from the left lane, at 11:58 p.m. The driver continued driving eastbound until he was pulled over by the officer and arrested by members of the Street Takeover Task Force.

The driver, Cristian Sanchez, 25, of Coram, was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated and Leaving the Scene of an accident with no injuries.

He is being held overnight in the Fifth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on March 8. 

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
