Following an investigation by Suffolk County Police Arson Section detectives, officials have determined that multiple brush fires that ignited on March 8 were accidental in nature.
Detectives believe the fires were sparked by embers from a backyard fire at a home on North Cozine Road, where an attempt to make s’mores inadvertently led to flames spreading. Strong winds are suspected to have carried embers, causing additional fires to erupt and spread rapidly.
Authorities responded to several brush fires throughout Manorville on March 8, with fire departments working tirelessly to contain the blazes. No serious injuries were reported, but the fires caused significant concern among local residents.
The Suffolk County Police Department is continuing its investigation, speaking with witnesses and following up on tips to gather more details about the incident.
Residents are reminded to exercise extreme caution when handling open flames, particularly during dry and windy conditions, to prevent unintended fire hazards.
