The weather is looking a lot more like Spring so it’s time to get out there and have fun! Kickoff outdoor fun with bubbles. National Bubble Week is a special occasion that is recognized the week that contains the first day of Spring.

Here are tips to making your own bubbles and having fun with bubbles.

How to Make Bubbles

  • Basic Bubbles: Mix 1 cup dishwashing soap with 6 cups of water and 1 tablespoon of glycerin (found at most drug stores).

  • Bubbles for Paint Art: Mix 1 part liquid dish soap with 1 part washable paint and 2 parts water. Mix well.

  • Bubbles for Building: Mix 1 gallon of cold tap water with 5 oz. of dish detergent and 1 oz. of glycerin. Mix well.

Fun Bubble Activities

  • Bubble Contests: Compete to see who can blow the biggest bubble, the smallest bubble, the bubble that can fly the highest or the one that last the longest before popping.

  • Frozen Bubbles: Blow a tower of bubbles onto a paper plate or paper cup and quickly place it into the freezer. The bubbles will soon freeze and form like crystals.

  • Bubble Chase: Blow lots of bubbles in the air and have the kids chase after them and pop them before they hit the ground.

  • Bubble Pictures: Using the bubble mixture per instructions above for “Bubbles for Paint Art” have the kids blow into the bubbles with a straw until lots of bubbles form to the top of your bowl. Press a sheet of paper lightly onto the formed bubbles to catch bubble shapes or have kids blow the bubbles and catch it in the air with a sheet of paper. Continue the process using different bubble mixture colors. Lay the paper out in the sun to let the picture dry.
  • Geometric Bubbles: Using the bubble mixture per instructions above for “Bubbles for Building,” take a dinner plate and wet its surface with the bubbles liquid. Take a wet straw and have the tip touch the plate as you blow a bubble dome onto the plate. Continue to blow more bubble domes to create a cool geometric design. You can also create a bubble dome within another bubble by blowing a large bubble on the plate and then inserting the tip of a wet straw into the center of the dome to blow another bubble as the tip of the straw is touching the plate.

There are endless ways to have fun with bubbles. Share ways you have fun with bubbles!
