Mineola, NY - March 21, 2019 - Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that a Hempstead MS-13 member who was arrested in March 2017 for attempting to murder three people, including a two-year-old child he sexually assaulted, was sentenced today to 26 years to life in prison.
Defendant Tommy Alvarado-Ventura, also known as Montana, 33, pleaded guilty on February 13 before Supervising Judge Teresa Corrigan to:
- Attempted Murder in the First Degree (an A-I felony)
- Two counts of Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child (an A-II felony)
- Three counts of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (a B violent felony)
- Four counts of Assault in the First Degree (a B violent felony)
- Two counts of Assault in the Second Degree (a D violent felony)
- Two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (a D violent felony)
- Strangulation in the Second Degree (a D violent felony)
- Sex Abuse in the First Degree (a D violent felony)
- The NCDA had recommended a pre-trial sentence of 30 years to life in prison.
“This defendant sexually assaulted a helpless toddler and brutally stabbed and attempted to murder two women, including the child’s mother, in a horrific and unconscionable spree of violence,” DA Singas said “The depravity of this defendant knows few parallels, and he should spend the rest of his life in prison for these despicable crimes.”
DA Singas said that at approximately 2:30 a.m. on March 22, 2017, the defendant tried to kill a woman outside El Mariachi Loco Bar in Hempstead by stabbing and slashing her. The woman had attempted to talk to the defendant about a disagreement in the bar. Alvarado-Ventura stabbed and slashed the woman in her back, thigh and hands. He then put the knife inside her mouth and slashed the corner of her face, leaving a scar. She was terrorized and permanently injured.
As the defendant continued to attack the victim, his co-defendant, Antony Almendarez, prevented good Samaritans from intervening on her behalf. The two defendants fled the scene when they realized witnesses were calling 911. The victim sustained a collapsed lung, permanent scarring on her body and nerve damage to her fingers.
After fleeing the scene, Alvarado-Ventura returned to his girlfriend’s apartment in Hempstead, while Almendarez went home. Alvarado-Ventura had agreed to watch his girlfriend’s children while she worked. The defendant tried to kill the woman’s two-year old daughter by savagely beating her about the face, strangling her and sexually assaulting her. The child suffered catastrophic injuries that required hospitalization and surgeries. When his girlfriend returned from work, the defendant attempted to murder her by beating and stabbing her on her arms, hands and neck.
The defendant was arrested at the girlfriend’s home after police were called to respond by a neighbor
The victims from the separate incidents were all taken to Winthrop Hospital, where Nassau County Police Department members connected the two incidents to the defendant.
Almendarez pleaded guilty to two counts of Assault in the First Degree on April 5, 2018, and was sentenced to five years in prison for his involvement in the incident outside the bar. Almendarez was not involved in the later incidents.
