Elmont Man Arrested After Barricading Himself with Victim in Crawl Space; Faces Multiple Assault and Kidnapping Charges

Elmont man arrested after assaulting and holding woman captive in crawl space, facing multiple felony charges.

The Fifth Squad reports the arrest of an Elmont man for an incident that occurred on Friday, March 21, 2025 at 1:00 pm in Elmont.
 
According to Detectives, police responded to a Locustwood Boulevard residence for a disturbance. Officers were informed that a verbal argument occurred between the Defendant Lyadell Sutherland, 30, and a female victim, 22. Southerland prohibited the female victim from leaving his
residence and calling 911. He intentionally struck the victim numerous times and forcibly removed her cell phone from her hands.
 
While at scene, officers were denied access into the home to investigate. After numerous attempts to make contact, the defendant barricaded himself inside the home, with the victim, in a crawl space. Officers ultimately gained access into the residence and safely located the victim and defendant.
 
The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment. The defendant was placed under arrest and transported to a nearby hospital.
 
Defendant Lyadell Sutherland is charged with Kidnapping 2nd Degree, Assault 2nd Degree, Assault  rd Degree, Unlawful Imprisonment, Criminal Mischief 4th Degree and Tampering with a Witness. He will be arraigned on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.
 
Further investigation revealed the defendant was also responsible for an incident that occurred in Sunday, March 9, 2025 and is charged with Assault 2nd Degree and Strangulation.
