Suffolk County Police today arrested a woman for driving while intoxicated with her 12-year-old child in the vehicle following a motor vehicle crash in Smithtown last night.

Kristen Vassallo was driving a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas southbound on New York Avenue, when the Volkswagen struck a vehicle parked in front of 67 New York Ave. at 8:23 p.m. The force of the impact pushed the parked vehicle into another parked vehicle, causing damage.

Fourth Precinct officers arrived at the scene and determined Vassallo exhibited signs of intoxication. Vassallo, 48, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Passenger 15 Years Old or Younger (Leandra’s Law) and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

There were no injuries, and the child was released to a guardian.

Vassallo will be held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on March 26.

The Volkswagen was impounded for a safety check. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
