Long Island St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

St. Patrick’s Day is Saturday, March 17th, and millions of people, dressed in traditional green, will celebrate the day with parades, festivities and good cheer. The holiday was originally observed in honor of St. Patrick, a Catholic bishop who advanced the cause of Christianity throughout Ireland at great personal cost and who died on March 17, 461. According to a 2011 National Geographic article, the holiday as we know it has become a way to honor the saint and to confirm Irish ethnic identity, creating bonds of solidarity. St. Patrick's Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador and in Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated in Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, making it, perhaps, the most widely celebrated saint's day in the world.

So, don your green and get ready to enjoy some of the fun (and unusual) ways Long Islanders will be celebrating the holiday!
