Knife-Wielding Man Shot by Police After Charging Officers in Bay Shore; Dies at Hospital
Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating after a man armed with a knife was shot by officers, and later died.
Third Precinct officers responded to 303 Wurz St. at approximately 12:30 p.m. after a family member of Bruce Boyd contacted police for a welfare check. When officers arrived, they were met in front of the home by Boyd’s wife, who allowed the officers into the home.
When the officers encountered Boyd inside the home, he was armed with a knife and had multiple self-inflicted wounds. The officers retreated out the front door and Boyd charged out of the home at the officers, ignoring commands to drop the knife. At least one officer fired at and struck Boyd.
Officers administered CPR until medical personnel arrived. Boyd, 54, was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore where he was pronounced dead.
