AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO MIDNIGHT EDT THURSDAY NIGHT The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam. from midnight tonight to midnight EDT Thursday night. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Fine Particulates. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. Who needs to head to Holland when you have the Long Island Tulip Festival at Waterdrinker Farm in Manorville? Over 1 million tulips will be blooming in brilliant fields of yellow, red, orange, pink, and white. The pretty spring-blooming perennials, as well as daffodil patches, giant wooden shoes, and a windmill, are beautiful backdrops for picture-perfect photos.

New this year are U-pick tulips for $1 a stem. Pick your own bouquet to enjoy at home.

 

Family fun at the farm

 

For non-flower family-friendly fun, visitors can enjoy mini-golf, a jumbo jump pad, an obstacle course and tractor pedal cars for kids, a wooden playland, and a bevy of barnyard animals including pigs, alpacas, goats, sheep, and alpaca. Weekends will feature live music and food trucks. Tulips, hyacinths, and other flowers and plants, as well as gifts, are available for purchase. The over 21-crowd can stop by the neighboring Long Island Farm Brewery serving beer, hard cider, and wine. 

 

The Waterdrinker Family Farm & Garden is located at 663 Wading River Road in Manorville. The Tulip Festival is open rain or shine, seven days a week, Monday-Thursday: 10 a.m. -6 p.m., Friday: 10 a.m. - 7:30 p.m., Saturday: 9 a.m. -7:30 p.m. and Sunday: 9 a.m. -6 p.m. Admission is $20 per person, children 2 and under are free.
