Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican Militia 's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). This year marks the 151st Cinco de Mayo celebration. Cinco de Mayo has become a bigger holiday north of the border than it is to the south, and being adopted into the holiday calendar of more and more people every year. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. Revelers mark the occasion with parades, parties, mariachi music, Mexican folk dancing, piñatas, classic Mexican dishes and drink specials, specifically on tequila, margaritas and Corona beer.
