"Pop and Stop" Operation: Multiple Arrests Made for Illegal Gambling Devices

Third Precinct POP Unit Conducts Major Raid on Illegal Gambling Devices, Arrests Two

Third Precinct Problem Oriented Police (POP) Officers report multiple Arrests within the confines of the Third Precinct on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.
 
Officers assigned to the POP Unit conducted “Operation Pop and Stop” in conjunction with the Nassau County Fire Marshall, the Town of North Hempstead Building Department Code Enforcement Officers, the New York State Liquor Authority Investigators and the Town of Mineola Building Department Supervisors targeting illegal gambling devices being used in various businesses. The following establishments were in possession of these devices:
  • Port Café - 2132 Jericho Turnpike, Garden City Park. A total of three (3) gambling
machines were seized along with US currency. Defendant Jose Araujo, 60, was
arrested without incident.
  • Madeira Sports Café - 247 Mineola Blvd, Mineola. A total of eight (8) gambling machines were seized along with US currency. Defendant Domingos Martins, 61, was arrested without incident.
Both defendants are charged with Possession of a Gambling Device, and Govern Licensee: On Premise Disorderly/Gambling. They were each issued two (2) Appearance Tickets returnable to First District Court 99 Main Street, Hempstead, on May 24, 2023.
 
Both defendants were issued multiple violations by the Nassau County Fire Marshal and New York State Liquor Authority.
