New York State has implemented a gas tax holiday that began Wednesday, June 1 and will extend through the end of 2022 to help drivers across Long Island get some relief. Summer is notorious for higher gas prices anyway, and with the pain at the pump seemingly growing daily, commuters and day trippers are feeling it especially hard this year.

This tax holiday will provide a reduction of at least 16 cents per gallon.

But experts say, we will not see that drop all at once. It could take a few days for the savings to hit the pumps.

Some counties, including Nassau and Suffolk, are pledging additional savings by collecting taxes only on the first $3 charged per gallon of gas and diesel, regardless of the actual price at the pump.

"Suffolk County's gas tax cap, combined with New York State's cap, will put money back in our residents' pockets and provide drivers with much needed relief at the pump,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone in a statement. “Every penny matters and we will continue to do what we can to help our residents through these difficult times."

If you do not see a lowered price at your local gas station officials are encouraging people to report them to the Department of Consumer Affairs.
