Junior League of Long Island Names New President
Roslyn, N.Y. - June 15, 2011, The Junior League of Long Island (www.jlli.org), a nonprofit organization of women volunteers, today announced that Georgia Gier of Oyster Bay has been appointed President for the upcoming year. The office of the Junior League President is an annual appointment by the JLLI Board of Directors.
As Junior League President, Ms. Gier will be responsible for directing volunteer activities and community projects such as Kids in the Kitchen, Project Playground, Compute the Future and First Step. The Junior League of Long Island strives to be the organization of choice for voluntarism and community partnerships to improve the health and well-being of women and children on Long Island. The 2011-2012 year will focus on projects aimed at tackling domestic violence and environmental health on Long Island.
Ms. Gier, a member of the Junior League since 2006, is a high school science teacher at the W. T. Clarke High School in the East Meadow School District and is working toward her Ph.D. in Science Learning Environments. She is also a faculty member of the University of Phoenix, where she was recently promoted to Lead Faculty for The Natural Sciences and Health Care College. Ms. Gier has been an active volunteer with The Climate Project headed by former Vice President Al Gore since 2006.
"I could not be more honored to begin this year long journey as President of the Junior League of Long Island. We have an exciting year planned with programs, projects and trainings that will benefit our Long Island community as well as our members," said Ms. Gier. "This year we will celebrate our 50th Anniversary with The Association of Junior Leagues International, which includes a membership of over 155,000 women in 292 Leagues in four countries. We are living the legacy of our founders who began our League in 1951 and joined the Association in 1962. We are humbled to be able to continue their philanthropic and educational initiatives for the community and continue to grow and develop the potential of women through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers."
The JLLI Board also announced that Kelly Morgano has been appointed President-Elect for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. Mrs. Morgano is a resident of Manhasset and has been a member of the Junior League since 2002.
