LI's Adorable Adoptables is a weekly column by Allison Matos, a lifelong Long Island resident who has been advocating animal adoption since 2012. Allison's weekly posts highlight local animals in need of adoption, and cover general animal welfare topics as well.
Want to adopt one of the most handsome pooches Long Island has to offer? Head down to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter and meet Berger! Not only is Berger adorable, he’s also been evaluated by a professional trainer who gives Berger an A+ for Awesomeness! Berger is well- socialized and well-adjusted, but because of his BIG size (but equally big heart) it is recommended that Berger be in a home with teens and up, and that can provide training like he’s been receiving at the shelter. Berger learned to walk on leash, enjoys his crate, and loves to say hello to everone he meets. For more information about Berger, contact the shelter through their website.
Next door at Last Hope Animal Rescue, you can meet Scarlett. This beauty is a Beagle mix with a lovely mask, reminiscent of the coloring on a Smooth Collie or St. Bernard face. Her face seems to have a perpetual smile. She’s the size of a big Beagle, and approximately 2-3 years old. Her tail is feathered and always wagging. Scarlett is the perfect size for a family dog and would love to be your newest family member today! For more information about Scarlett, check out her webpage here!
If you’re looking for a beautiful 1 year old orange tabby boy to be your furever friend, then look no further. Poor Carlton was rescued from the dire circumstances of the Amityville Trailer Park that is under demolition. While Carlton spent this past winter outside in the bitter cold, he is so grateful to now be comfortable, fed, and tended to by the Last Hope volunteers. Carlton is a very affectionate kitty and loves being pet!! How can you resist this face? For more information about Carlton, check out his webpage here!
Our girl Bessie is a true rescue! This 5 year old yorkie mix was dumped at a high kill facility where she spent most of her days facing the walls and crying. Thankfully the volunteers at Sweetest Dog Rescue scooped up this gem and brought her to a calmer environment where she can get the love she deserves. If you are looking for a sweet girl truly in need of a caring companion, then visit their website, or contact Sweetest Dog Rescue via email.
Little Shadow, you are too cute! This 2-3 year old basenji mix male is described as playful and loving and will follow you everywhere (hence the perfect name). Little Shadow gets along with other dogs and is great with humans of all ages/sizes. If you’re looking for a close companion, Little Shadow is the dog for you! For more information, visit their website, or contact Sweetest Dog Rescue via email.
Looking for a true Whipper Snapper? Well here they are! Whipper and his brother Snapper are 6 year old male beagles who were dumped at a shelter because they weren't the best hunting dogs (not sure why it took 6 years to figure that out, but we’ll run with it. What I can tell you is that Beagles are great pack animals and are great companions for all! The ultimate dream is for these two brothers to be adopted together, but two separate forever homes would be okay too. For more information about Whipper and Snapper, contact Sweetest Dog Rescue at www.sweetestdogrescue.com or Sweetestdogrescue@gmail.com
Thanks for reading and please remember to always adopt, never shop!
