Police Officer Airlifted to Hospital After Collision with Commercial Van in Islip: Investigation Underway

Police officer injured in motor vehicle crash airlifted to hospital while investigating flooding in Islip.

Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that injured a police officer in Islip this morning.
 
A Third Precinct police officer was engaged in traffic control regarding flooding on Eastbound Sunrise Highway, near Carleton Avenue, when a commercial van struck the passenger side of the police vehicle at 11:10 a.m.
 
The officer was airlifted via police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the van, Howard Shapiro, 62, of Lawrence, was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore as a precaution.
 
The vehicles were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6555.
