Two new exhibits can be found at the Bellport Brookhaven Historical Society this summer. Opening August 14th is the Hidden Treasures Exhibit - two galleries are highlighting gorgeous treasures that have not been seen for quite a while. Fans of tole ware, elaborately painted tin ware, will enjoy a wide range of beautifully painted trays, boxes and other interesting items. The collection is reputed to be second only to that of the Smithsonian. I tended to spend my time looking at the wedding gown retrospective - featuring gowns from the late 1800s through the 1920's, thirties and forties. A tiny beaded flapper dress is so small that it's hard to believe an adult could wear it. And those little waistlines...didn't these gals know about carbs? Of course, people tended to be smaller then. The bias cuts, gorgeous trains, fantastic fabrics, beautifully romantic shoes and lingerie make this gallery a place to spend some time looking and imagining. The permanent collections can be viewed also, including the recent exhibits on the Grucci Fireworks and the fabulous and glamorous Ingrid Bergman. Long-standing exhibits in the Barn Museum include historic local pieces that reflect the area. Other buildings in the complex include the historic Post-Crowell House, a Milk House, a Blacksmith Shop, and a lovely Exchange Shop just brimming with antiques. To launch the Hidden Treasures exhibit, a Summer Party is planned for the evening of August 14th. Tickets are available for the Party, which includes cocktails, food, dancing and an auction of many items, from Mexican Silver, through paintings, purses, posters and portfolios (donated by designers, artists, jewelers, trustees and pilots).
Tickets are available at the Exchange Shop, or contact the society at 631-776-7640 or at www.bellportbrookhavenhistoricalsociety.org. The Museum hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Museum closes after Labor Day.
