Introduction
Hello fellow Long Islanders. My name is Jason Sanders. The sport of Lacrosse has been an intregal part of my life since I was five years old. It originally grabbed my attention because it is team oriented and uses hand-eye coordination. As I grew older, I found the sport to be very exciting and I feel that it has helped guide me into the person I am today.
Lacrosse is said to be the fastest sport on two feet. I feel it is a combination of soccer, hockey and football. Lacrosse is usually played on grass or astroturf, there is a lot of physical contact, and the goal is to put the rubber ball in the 6' by 6' cage. The field is 110 yards long and 60 yards wide. There is a midfield line used for face-offs, which decides possession, and also for maintaining the proper number of players on each end of the field. A game consists of ten field players on each team. There are three attackmen that are primarily offensive scorers. Three midfielders that can play on both offense and defense. Three defensemen, who use slightly longer sticks to defend the goal, and a goalie, which uses a wider lacrosse stick head, for saving the ball.
It is primarily an east coast sport, but is expanding rapidly all over the country. Long Island is considered a hot-bed for lacrosse. Throughout the year, there are many events, camps, and tournaments that demonstrate how the game is to be played.
I have played and/or coached lacrosse for over 20 years. I currently conduct private and group one hour sessions for players ages 7 to 17. I played at Ward Melville High School and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Please visit www.learnlax.com if you have any questions or concerns about lacrosse.
