Current and former residents of Bellmore are being encouraged to partake in a unique opportunity to preserve and share the town's rich history. The Bellmore Memorial Library is hosting a special "Day of Digitization" on Saturday, August 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., where community members can contribute old photos and memorabilia that document Bellmore's past.
The initiative stems from the library's commitment to preserving and promoting the town's local history. Back in 2013, the library was granted funding from StoryCorps for an oral history project. Since then, it has continued its efforts to collect oral histories, as well as expand the collection of pictures and artifacts that offer insight into Bellmore's heritage.
During the Day of Digitization event, individuals can either donate historical items and contribute them permanently to the library’s collection or allow the library to photograph, scan and digitize the original materials, ensuring their preservation for future generations to access and appreciate.
Examples of artifacts:
Postcards, bank calendars, menus
Train timetables
Dog tags, medals or other military decorations
Commemorative giveaways (e.g. matchbooks, coasters, napkins)
Journals, diaries, ledgers, or correspondence
Programs from concerts or other events
Pennants, buttons, posters, etc.
