Tragic Crash Claims Life of Motorcyclist on Sunken Meadow State Parkway: State Police Seek Witnesses

State Police responded to a crash on the southbound Sunken Meadow State Parkway in the area of exit SM2, in the Town of Smithtown

On Wednesday August 1, 2023, at around 11:30 pm, the State Police responded to a crash on the southbound Sunken Meadow State Parkway in the area of exit SM2, in the Town of Smithtown, Suffolk County. 
 
The operator, Jaron Lowndes, age 44, of Amityville, NY, was operating a 2005 Yamaha motorcycle southbound on the Sunken Meadow State Parkway and came upon a vehicle stopped in the right lane, which was behind a disabled vehicle. Mr. Lowndes subsequently lost control of the motorcycle and was ejected.  Mr. Lowndes struck the rear of the stopped vehicle, a 2019 Ford EcoSport, and the motorcycle continued traveling southbound striking the disabled vehicle, a 2001 Toyota Rav4. 
 
Mr. Lowndes was transported from the scene and pronounced dead at South Shore University Hospital. There were no injuries to any other persons resulting from this collision. 
 
The State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) and Forensic Identification Unit (FIU) responded to the scene to investigate.
