News 12 Long Island's Chief Meteorologist Bill Korbel and longtime reporter Ken Grimball participated in a Long Island tradition on July 31 at the Long Island Ducks game at Bethpage Ballpark. Korbel threw the first pitch and Grimball serenaded the crowd with the National Anthem. In addition, the first 1,500 people to arrive at the game were given their own Bill Korbel Bobblehead doll. News 12 Long Island was also a sponsor of the event.
Korbel began his forecasting career as a weather officer in the Air Force and retired from the Air Force Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel. Following, he spent 15 years at WOR radio, and then joined the News 12 Long Island team as Chief Meteorologist in 1993. Korbel is an avid golfer and a commercially licensed pilot.
Grimball, an Emmy Award winner and recipient of Long Island Press Club and Folio Awards for Broadcast Excellence, has enjoyed a distinguished career in broadcasting. Prior to joining News 12 Long Island in 1986, he was a reporter for WCBS and a producer/reporter for the United Methodist Communications Television Network. Before entering broadcasting, Grimball was a singer and dancer at Radio City Music Hall and served in the chorus of the famed Metropolitan Opera for nearly seven years.
