Labor Day Weekend is almost upon us! Complete the last few items on your summer bucket list with these great local events.
With Labor Day, Long Islanders are encouraged to celebrate with one final summer bash before the season formally comes to a close! Falling on September 5th this year, Labor Day not only traditionally means a day off of work, but an entire extended weekend of holiday events. This year is certainly no exception to that rule, as a jam-packed entertainment schedule guarantees fun for the entire family!
Locating the origins of Labor Day takes us back to the late 19th century, where trade unions were beginning to set the wheels in motion for a holiday devoted to labor. Oregon was actually the first state to make it an official holiday in 1887, and after more than two dozen states followed, President Grover Cleveland made it a federal holiday in 1894.
While we have come a long way since the 1800s, the core idea of the holiday will always be relevant - celebrating the contributions of workers! With family festivals, outdoor concerts, farmers markets, and other assorted fun planned all weekend long, this Labor Day Weekend is shaping up to be one of the best in Long Island’s history!
So grab your planner and be sure to pack it with some of the great events below!
Outdoor events are a staple of Labor Day Weekend, so the challenge will not be in finding one to attend, but deciding on one! From family-friendly street festivals and art vendor fairs, to nature walks and historic tours, grab some comfortable shoes and prepare for a few days of outdoor entertainment!
