Arrests Made in Mineola Weapon Incident Linked to Bus Robbery

Two men were arrested for wielding weapons in a Mineola incident, which was later linked to a bus robbery, leading to their apprehension and impending court arraignment.

Third Squad Detectives report the arrests of two (2) men for Criminal Possession of a Weapon that occurred on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at 6:30 pm in Mineola.
 
According to detective, a male was observed walking in the vicinity of Mineola Blvd. and Old Country Road. He approached a telephone pole, removed a large piece of wood and proceeded to chase a second male. Detectives activated their vehicle’s emergency lights and order both subjects to stop. The male with the piece of wood was given verbal commands to drop the object. He complied and both subjects were placed into custody without further incident. During the investigation it was determined both subjects fit the description of a robbery reported through 911 on a NICE bus. The investigation revealed the second male brandished a knife on the bus prior to what the detectives observed. Palo Howe (wood), 44, of 20 Wendell Street, Hempstead, and Dwayne Smith (knife), 34, of 3 Camp Road, Massapequa were arrested.

Defendant Howe and Smith are charged with Menacing 2 nd Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3 rd Degree. They will be arraigned on Friday, August 11, 2023 at First District Court, Hempstead.
