Mt. Sinai, NY resident and Chief Executive Officer/Chief Operating Officer for Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH), Carol Gomes, was appointed the next board chair of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) at the association’s annual meeting held July 26, 2023. Gomes is completing the remaining year of Richard Margulis’ term. He recently retired from his position as CEO of Long Island Community Hospital.
Gomes has worked in the healthcare field for 30 plus years, serving Stony Brook as chief quality officer and associate director for quality management with administrative oversight for the departments of Continuous Quality Improvement, Decision Support Services, Clinical Pathways, and Management Engineering before taking on her current role. SBUH is the region’s only tertiary care center and Level 1 Trauma Center for both adults and children. Home to the nation’s first pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center, the hospital has been recognized for excellence in acute services for burn care, AIDS treatment, and cardiac care, among other specialties. It is a Level 4 Regional Perinatal Center and offers a state-designated Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP).
The recipient of numerous leadership awards, including the Master Award and the Excellence Management Award from the American Society of Clinical Pathology, and the Distinguished Alumna Award from Stony Brook University, Gomes was awarded the Stony Brook Council Medal of Excellence for outstanding service in 2021. She has served on the prestigious Malcolm Baldridge Quality Program’s Board of Examiners since 1999, most recently as its Senior Examiner and Alumni Examiner.
Gomes holds two master’s degrees from Stony Brook University – Management and Policy, and Healthcare Management. She teaches at the university’s School of Health Technology and Management.
