On August 16th, Suffolk County Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services (FRES) Emergency Services Dispatcher Justin Avolio demonstrated exceptional professionalism and life-saving skills when he received an enhanced 911 call regarding a 5-year-old male found at the bottom of a backyard pool in Great River. Avolio's swift response and prompt action played a pivotal role in saving the child's life.

The incident unfolded when the child's family discovered him at the bottom of the pool. They immediately removed him from the water and dialed 911 for assistance. Dispatcher Avolio took the call and quickly assessed the situation. Understanding that every second counted, he initiated CPR instructions over the phone, guiding the family through the life-saving procedure.

Throughout the call, Dispatcher Avolio remained composed and provided clear and concise instructions to the family. He stayed on the line, offering guidance and support until the arrival of the Suffolk County Police Department and Emergency Medical Services personnel. When the call was terminated by Dispatcher Avolio, it was reported that the child was breathing.

Thanks to Dispatcher Avolio's calm demeanor, quick thinking, and expert guidance, the child's life was saved. The patient was then transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for further pediatric care. “Dispatcher Avolio's response to this incident exemplifies the dedication and professionalism that our emergency services personnel bring to their roles every day,” said Suffolk County Commissioner of Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services, Patrick Beckley. “His ability to remain calm under pressure and provide life-saving instructions over the phone played a crucial role in saving the life of this young child. We are incredibly proud of his quick thinking and commend him for his exceptional efforts."

This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of enhanced 911 services and the critical role that emergency dispatchers play in emergency situations. Dispatcher Avolio's quick response and effective communication highlight the importance of having well-trained professionals on the other end of the line during times of crisis.

The Suffolk County Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services extends its thoughts and best wishes to the child and their family during this challenging time. The department also urges all residents to prioritize water safety, especially when it comes to children, by ensuring proper supervision and taking necessary precautions to prevent accidents.
