Weather Alert

AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 11 PM EDT MONDAY The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam. from 11 AM to 11 PM EDT Sunday. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. The toll free number is 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.

Northport, NY - August 21, 2018 - Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci joined the Town of Huntington Youth Bureau Drug and Alcohol Counseling Center (YBDACC) Prevention Services Team, Cornell Cooperative Extension SeaStar Marine Camp and student campers for the unveiling of the Fuchs Pond Park Mural on Friday, August 17.

“It warms my heart knowing that these conscientious students in the Town of Huntington care enough about protecting our local environment that they would take on this project,” said Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci. “I know the mural will inspire others to protect natural and open spaces around our wonderful town.”

The Fuchs Pond Park Mural sends a friendly reminder to fellow park-goers to help preserve the area as a safe, drug-free community space for all. The mural is composed of 21 decorated tiles designed by campers, ages 6-12 years, from Cornell Cooperative Extensions Sea Star Marine Camp. Out of 200 submissions, the selected artwork was chosen for their creativity and thoughtful messages.

The mural is located in Fuchs Pond Park Preserve alongside the walking bridge off of Waterside Avenue in Northport.

For many years, Fuchs Pond Park Preserve has offered members of the community a safe environment to enjoy the outdoors. Recently the park experienced a noticeable increase in “party residuals” – including litter, drug & alcohol paraphernalia, graffiti, & campfires. Town Park Police & Public Safety have made efforts to enforce the rules that ban these activities and this has led to a significant decrease in residuals. The Fuchs Pond Park Mural will help increase knowledge of the park rules and will work in conjunction with law enforcement to help address this issue and maintain the integrity of Fuchs Pond Park Preserve.

The Huntington Drug and Alcohol Prevention Services Team provides research-based, data-driven programs and strategies to reduce or prevent alcohol and other drug abuse in individuals, families and communities. Part of their initiative is to increase access to safe, drug-free environments as these serve as protective factors against youth high-risk behaviors. Cornell Cooperative Extension Sea Stars Marine Camp in Northport welcomes students from all over, ages 6-14, for weekly camps held at the Cranberry Hill Environmental Center in Fuchs Pond Park.
