Hempstead Man Arrested for Grand Larceny After Crime Spree at Adelphi University and Beyond

The Garden City Police Department reports the arrest of a Hempstead man for Grand Larceny that occurred on August 24, 2024 at 3:55 pm.
 
According to detectives, On June 18 at 2:45 pm Defendant Austin T. Withers,  28 of 96 Crowell Street was inside the Adelphi University Library located at 1 South Avenue, Garden City. Wither was observed removing a wallet without permission containing assorted credit cards and papers. The defendant did assume another identity to make purchases at the Jamaica Train Station. Further investigation revealed that earlier on June 18, 2024 at 2:30 pm defendant was inside the University Center at Adelphi and removed an Apple Air Pod valued at 250.00 dollars that did not belong to him. It was also revealed that on July 31, 2024 at 5:04 am defendant Withers entered a building located at 591 Stewart Avenue, Garden City and removed assorted credit cards from a desk without permission. He later used the cards to make purchases at various locations. On August 24, 2024 at 3:55 pm Garden City detectives located defendant Austin T. Withers at his residence and were able to place him into police custody without incident.
 
Withers is charged with Grand Larceny 4 th Degree, Burglary 3 rd Degree, two counts of Petit Larceny, Identity Theft 2 nd degree and two counts of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. He was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday, August 25, 2024.
 
Detectives advise that defendant Withers frequents colleges in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens counties. Detectives request that if anyone feels they are a victim that they can contact the Garden City Police at 516 – 465 -4150.
