What: Long Island Thermography is celebrating the grand opening of its Brightwaters facility. Local elected officials and breast cancer survivors will take part in a ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by a tour of the facility and a demonstration of breast thermography technology.
Long Island Thermography provides a state-of-the-art screening procedure for the detection of breast cancer. Breast thermography captures heat images of the breast. When a tumor increases in size, a large blood supply forms and gives off heat. The heat signal is then picked up by infrared technology and converts this data into a colorful image, indicating the presence and location of a developing tumor.
Breast thermography is becoming popular within the healthcare community and is currently being used worldwide. More than 800 peer-reviewed breast thermography studies referenced by The Index Medicus have found that, when thermography was added to a woman's breast health check-up, the survival rate increased by 61%. When breast thermography was used as part of a multi-modal approach, 95% of early stage cancers were detected. Women in the U.S. are also concerned about the radiation exposure they receive from mammograms. Unlike mammograms, thermography is free of any radiation and the procedure is painless.
