DWI Driver's Rampage: Child in Car, Trooper Injured in Violent Arrest on Southern State Parkway

On Friday afternoon, September 15, 2023, Troopers responded to a call for a disabled vehicle, a 2020 Jeep Cherokee, partially blocking the left lane on the Southern State Parkway near exit 18, in the town of Hempstead, Nassau County.  

 

The Trooper arrived on scene and interviewed the driver, Kanhai Reid 40 of Queens, NY, and smelled alcohol coming from the vehicle.  When the Trooper asked Reid to exit the vehicle, he became combative and after a brief struggle he was handcuffed and placed under arrest.  During the struggle the Trooper was injured. In the vehicle there was a 5-year-old child.

 

Reid was charged with Aggravated DWI Leandra Law an E – Felony (Driving While Intoxicated or Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs with a child in vehicle under 16 in the vehicle), Assault 2nd Degree a D – Felony, Obstructing Governmental Administration an A – Misdemeanor, Resisting Arrest an A – Misdemeanor and Endangering the Welfare of a Child an A Misdemeanor and will be arraigned in Nassau County First District Court.
