The Boomers Are Coming
This year, the oldest of the baby boomers are sixty years of age. Long Island has a population of well-over 300,000 boomers born between 1946 and 1964. They are generally a successful, educated generational group that has had a tremendous impact on the country.
Through its sheer size - and, some would say, self-indulgence - the generation has given rise, or given teeth, to a host of fashions and institutions that are now central to popular culture: rock n' roll, working moms, Earth Day, sports-utility vehicles, Botox, Viagra, and Starbucks.
Numerous recent studies indicate that boomers will change the face of retirement by remaining involved in community life and sometimes changing careers. They want to focus their collected experience and talent on something that contributes to the good of the community.
Boomers can play an important role in addressing poverty, educational deficiencies, lack of employment opportunities, racism, and poor access to health care.
