Horses For Heroes: A Veterans Program

Written by veterans  |  22. September 2009

Horses for Heroes program is dedicated to teaching equestrian skills and therapeutic horseback riding to Disabled Veterans. This work is done with the help of specially trained horses, a team of certified instructors and active duty military volunteers. Disabled Veterans of all ages, with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury or Traumatic Amputation are taught the foundations of Therapeutic Horseback Riding and equine behavior. Their goal is to help the Disable Veterans improve their self-confidence. Research shows that Disabled Veterans who participate in Therapeutic Riding as students and/or volunteers can experience physical, emotional, and mental rewards. Veterans with impaired mobility experience increased balance, muscle control, and strength. Therapeutic Riding motivates veterans with learning or intellectual impairments and helps to increase concentration, calmness, and independence. --- Regards, Walt Schmidt
