Fall is in the air, and October brings with it cooler temperatures, a switch to Fall produce at local farmers markets and farm stands, and the start to some beautiful Fall foliage across the Island.  October is also the harbinger of some of the best Autumn celebrations, outdoor excitement, and Halloween haunts.  The majority of Long Island’s Fall festivals and fairs are happening this October, so be sure to catch them before they are gone.  The Fall festivals on the Island include family-friendly festivals, terrifying Halloween haunts, and artistic Halloween events that have to be seen to be believed, like the Rise of the Jack O’Lanterns.  The Rise can be seen at the Old Westbury Gardens, and features over 5,000 hand-carved glowing jack o’lanterns on display - many of which are put together to make giant images of safari animals and even a dinosaur!

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is significant for Long Island where the prevalence of this kind of cancer is high.  Long Island is studied by breast cancer research group for being a cancer cluster, so it is of no surprise that most people know someone who has been affected by breast cancer.  The best way to celebrate this month is to educate yourself on early detection of breast cancer and support the groups that conduct research that benefits breast cancer patients.Be sure to take part in the handful of free public education seminars where experts will discuss recent breast cancer research and early detection techniques.

LongIsland.com is also your place for the most happening Halloween haunts in the area. If you’re looking for a haunted house, corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin carving and decorating, or just good old trick or treating, there is an event for you.  Check out our 2015 Halloween Guide for more information on terrifying fun in your neighborhood, and get started on planning an eventful October for you and your family!
