Weather Alert

ELEVATED RISK OF FIRE SPREAD Increasing northwest winds and drying low levels will create conditions more conducive for fire spread today into early this evening. Relative humidity is expected to decrease to near 25 to 30 percent this afternoon into early this evening, while wind gusts increase to 35 to 45 mph. An isolated gust to 50 mph will be possible. These conditions would likely aid fire spread if ignition occurs. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to exercise caution if handling any potential ignition sources, such as machinery, cigarettes, or matches. The annual statewide burn ban is in effect until May 14. No burn permits are issued. For more information about wildfire danger and wildfire prevention, please visit the New York Department of Environmental Conservation website at http://dec.ny.gov/environmental- protection/wildfires. This forecast considers meteorological, fuel, and land conditions and has been developed in coordination with state fire and land management officials. LI's Adorable Adoptables is a weekly column by Allison Matos, a lifelong Long Island resident who has been advocating animal adoption since 2012. Allison's weekly posts highlight local animals in need of adoption, and cover general animal welfare topics as well.

Available for adoption this week at Last Hope Animal Rescue in Wantagh is Columbo and Lucy…two of the cutest dogs I’ve ever laid eyes on.

He doesn’t have a raincoat or detective powers of deduction, but this Columbo has a cuteness like none other.   At about 60 pounds, this 5 year old Basset mix was blessed with quite the comical look and temperament.  He gazes up at you with expressive Hound eyes but his face has a slight Shepherd expression too.  Columbo likes to stop for belly rubs as he is walking which is pretty stinkin’ adorable, and would truly be a wonderful addition to any family he becomes a part of.  For more information about adopting Columbo, visit his webpage.

Family dog alert:  It’s my pleasure to introduce you to Lucy.  Lucy is one amazing dog that gets along with literally everyone she meets; that includes dogs, cats and kids!  Lucy was surrendered by her owner to a Virginia shelter - no one really knows why considering she’s such a sweet-natured-happy-go-lucky-lady.  Lucy may have a peanut allergy (maybe that’s why she was named Lucy-after the Peanuts comic strip), but it doesn’t slow her down. This girl would be an amazing addition to any household.  For more information about adopting Lucy, contact Last Hope’s online

More of a cat person? Looking for a smaller, furrier, larger, taller dog?  Don’t stop your search now - there are plenty of amazing animals throughout our Long Island Shelters who would LOVE the chance to find their forever home.  Why not take a trip to your local shelter and meet some of these amazing animals today!

And please remember - if you can’t adopt, donate.  If you can’t donate, volunteer. These animals are all so special and need our help.  Please do what you can!
