Weather Alert

AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 11 PM EDT MONDAY The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam. from 11 AM to 11 PM EDT Sunday. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. The toll free number is 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.

Au Pairs Celebrate Fall on Long Island

There are hundreds of au pairs living with families on Long Island and enjoying the great variety of events offered on Long Island in the fall. These young people from areas including Europe, Asia, South Africa, Australia and more are amazed by the fall events taking place in this part of the world. Au Pairs are young men and women (ages 18-26) from around the world who come to the US to live with American families and provide childcare while taking part in an exciting and educational cultural exchange program designated by the U.S. Department of State.

Many au pairs have heard of Halloween but never experienced it first hand. Now they are looking forward to experiencing this holiday American children find so exciting. Many will wear costumes and go trick or treating with their host families. They will carve pumpkins, bob for apples, drink apple cider and go on hayrides. They will take part in fall traditions, and then share these experiences with friends and family in their home countries.

Observing the leaves change color, and preparing for Thanksgiving are other things that Long Islanders enjoy and that are novelties for visitors to our country. Participating in the au pair program is a great way for people from around the world to live and learn the American lifestyle.

Au pairs also enjoy giving back to the communities in which they reside. Next month, au pairs with Au Pair Care will participate in the Festival of Trees by decorating and donating a tree to be auctioned off to benefit the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County. This year the event is taking place at the Cradle of Aviation in Garden City on November 25,26 and 27, Families on Long Island are invited to attend the Festival, view the trees and visit the museum and carousel.
