Mineral Sale at Hicksville’s Hidden Gem Museum
The Hicksville Gregory Museum is filled with minerals. And while those minerals are not technically gems, this small earth science and natural history museum could certainly be considered one.
There are about 10,000 mineral and rock specimens in the museum’s collection representing silicates, oxides, sulfides, carbonates and others. The exhibits illustrate the importance of minerals and how they affect Long Island’s geology. A vivid fluorescent mineral display is always a favorite. The museum also houses a collection of fossils and dinosaur eggs.
Learn about Long Island history
In addition to earth science, the Hicksville Gregory Museum teaches visitors about Long Island history through its exhibits and collections of historical memorabilia and artificats. The museum itself is housed in the Heitz Place Courthouse, which is believed to be the last remaining judicial building in Nassau County from the days when Nassau was part of Queens. The courthouse had three jail cells, and one jail cell remains at the museum.
The Annual Mineral Sale and Open House is a great opportunity to stop by and discover this interesting science and history museum located in the heart of Nassau County.
