We’ve made it to December, which many consider to be the most magical part of the year. Christmas trees and menorahs are lit left and right as communities gather together to celebrate holiday cheer and goodwill towards their fellow man. Children get into the holiday spirit as they patiently write their lists for Santa Claus and wait to meet him at parades and brunches, and those of all ages flock to festivals and craft fairs to shop for the special people in their lives.
December is also a time to reflect back on the past - on your past year, and even on Long Island’s past. Revel in the beauty and elegance of a former age by joining a tour of local homes, or by registering for Holiday High Tea at the Walt Whitman Birthplace, or Christmas with the Roosevelt’s at Sagamore Hill where you can “meet” Teddy Roosevelt and hear about his family’s holiday celebrations firsthand. The Vanderbilt Estate will also be decorated for the holidays and have special Christmas-themed tours with refreshments and treats.
This month, choose to start a new family tradition with one of these annual events, such as seeing the Nutcracker ballet on one of many stages across Long Island. If your family is more into quirky things, skip the tree lightings and go to the Lighting of the Big Duck, or see Santa ditch his reindeer and fly his plane to the Fire Island Lighthouse. Both are sure to be a hit with the kids, and also make for great photo ops!
Close out 2015 by choosing a fun-filled New Year’s Eve party that can be as loud or as fancy as you wish. This year’s parties are held in bars, clubs, restaurants, and even in the woods! Here’s to the last hoorah of 2015 - see you in 2016!
