Hicksville Man Arrested After Hostage Situation: Nassau County Police Successfully Negotiate Release of Victims
The Second Squad reports the arrest of a Hicksville man for an incident that occurred on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at 10:20 am in Hicksville.
According to Detectives, Police were notified by a male victim, 44, of an Assault that occurred at an Ohio Street residence. The male victim was able to escape and call Police.
Upon Police arrival, officers were informed that the defendant John Howell, 40, physically assaulted the male victim and a female victim, 56. Defendant Howell also threatened them with a knife, before barricading himself inside the home. The Defendant refused to allow officers inside the residence or the female victim to leave.
Nassau County Police Hostage Negotiation Team communicated with the female victim through the telephone and were eventually able to assist her in escaping. The female victim was safely removed from the home and refused medical attention. The Bureau of Special Operations made entry into the home, secured the defendant who was secreting himself in the attic, and placed him into custody without further incident. The defendant was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and released into Police custody.
The initial male victim required medical attention at a nearby hospital and no other injuries were reported.
Defendant John Howell is charged with two counts of Assault 3 rd Degree, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree, two counts of Menacing 2nd Degree and Unlawful Imprisonment 1st Degree. He will be arraigned on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at First District Court, 99 Main Street Hempstead.
