Bethpage, NY – November 7, 2012 – King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc. (Bethpage, New York) and its wholesale grocery supplier, Bozzuto’s Inc. (Cheshire, Connecticut), are donating $100,000 in the form of supermarket gift cards so that Long Islanders impacted by Hurricane Sandy can obtain food and other basic supplies. IGA stores supplied by Bozzuto’s also contributed to the $100,000, which is being donated to Long Island Cares/Harry Chapin Food Bank.
King Kullen Co-President Brian C. Cullen stated, “King Kullen is a Long Island supermarket company and we’re doing everything possible to help bring relief to Long Islanders hardest hit by the recent storm. These are our friends, neighbors, relatives, customers, and employees. We thank Bozzuto’s and participating IGA supermarkets for their additional support and are grateful to Long Island Cares/Harry Chapin Food Bank for its ability to get the gift cards to families and individuals in need.”
According to Long Island Cares/Harry Chapin Food Bank Executive Director Paule T. Pachter, the King Kullen gift cards will be distributed through Long Island Cares’ 580 community-based organizations in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
“King Kullen has a history of making a difference in the fight against hunger,” observed Pachter. “The generous $100,000 donation from King Kullen, Bozzuto’s and IGA supermarkets will go out immediately through Long Island Cares. Our goal is to ensure that those in need of food and supplies can receive both as quickly as possible.”
King Kullen is a long-time supporter of Long Island Cares. Since 1997, the company and its customers have participated in the annual “Check Out Hunger” campaign, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars so that Long Island Cares can fulfill its mission to provide emergency food where and when it is needed.
Headquartered in Bethpage, New York, King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc. is recognized by the Smithsonian Institution as American’s first supermarket. Founded in 1930 by Michael J. Cullen, King Kullen today operates 41 supermarkets and four Wild by Nature stores across Long Island.
