A Penguin Proposal and Other Unique Ways to Get Engaged On LI

Written by Catherine Eve  |  18. December 2019

The Long Island Aquarium is renowned for its marine life exhibits and activities including coral reef displays, touch tanks, a shark tank, and sea lion shows. But now it’s offering visitors a chance to bring romance and a memory of a lifetime to their aquarium experience with three marriage proposal packages.

Penguin Marriage Proposal – Cute penguins make for an even cuter marriage proposal  they can even present the engagement ring. A Penguin Marriage Proposal takes place during or after a Penguin Encounter, a close-up “meet and greet” with an African penguin where visitors learn about the playful birds and go behind the scenes at the Penguin Pavilion Exhibit. You can have a private Penguin Encounter or participate in a Penguin Encounter with other visitors and stay 15 minutes after for a private proposal.

Taking the Plunge Marriage Proposal – Feeling a little more adventurous? This marriage proposal involves the Shark Dive. During this underwater - and safe - experience, the participant wears a wetsuit and scuba gear (no scuba certification is needed) and gets put inside a cage – and right into the 120,000-gallon Lost City of Atlantis Shark Exhibit surrounded by sharks and other fish. After the Shark Dive, a proposal sign will be revealed for everyone to see.

Give Her the Butterflies! Proposal – The intimate Butterflies, Bugs & Birds exhibit is a peaceful and pretty location for a marriage proposal. You can have exclusive access to this lush tropical garden after the exhibit closes to the public at 5 p.m. The two of you will have 30 minutes of time to yourself accompanied by a cloud of fluttering butterflies.

Champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries, cheese and cracker platters, and a single rose can be added to packages.

The Long Island Aquarium is located at 431 East Main Street in Riverhead. For more information about the aquarium or planning a proposal at the aquarium, visit the Long Island Aquarium website or contact the Reservations Team at 631.208.9200, ext. 426 for more details.
