Blue Point is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven on the South Shore of Long Island in Suffolk. It is separated from the hamlet of Bayport in the Town of Islip by Namkee Creek. Blue Point was part of the Brookhaven Patent from King Charles II which was first settled in Setauket in 1655. The oldest dwelling in the hamlet is the Joseph Avery homestead which was built on the northside of Middle Road in 1812. Blue Point harbor played a major role in Revolutionary activities, and was primarily used by the British as a shipping point for getting valuable supplies off Long Island. American rebels from Connecticut frequently raided the British ships in Blue Point harbor. The expansion of the Long Island Rail Road to Blue Point in 1869 turned the small hamlet into a very popular summer resort, featuring several large hotels including the South Bay House (now called the Ursuline Home) and the Avery Five-Mile Look. The 2010 census indicates that Blue Point has a total population of 4,752. An earlier estimate states that the median household income was $70,333.
