sick of being sick!

12 Feb, 2012 1:03 a.m.

Vitamins. Minerals. Immune Support Supplements. Herbs. What else is one to do to stay healthy? It seems that no matter how hard my daughter tries to treat her body right, she still suffers at this time of year. The cold symptoms come and go, and go and come. Any miracle answers out there?

I suffer from pretty bad allergies, and I'm still not sure if they are seasonal or pet-related. I think it's cats...my mother swears by nasal spray, which I hate, but it does work.

But...I would also recommend regular exercise, especially if she is chronically ill. Obviously good nutrition is important, but you've got to use those calories, vitamins and protein for something more than metabolism. (I am not suggesting that your daughter is inactive...) In my own life I have experienced periods of going to the gym regularly, cardio and muscle building, and then periods of being so busy, stuck on the computer, barely having time to talk a 30-minute walk, and I've noticed the difference. Exercise makes you feel better both physically and mentally, you have a solid chunk of time in the day to not worry about anything but your heart rate and breathing. Exercise supports your immune system, it relaxes you, it releases endorphins which make you feel better, and in the end, you look better. You don't have to do anything crazy, just start with walking at least a mile every day, lift some 5-lb weights, do 10 pushups and some crunches. Even if it doesn't solve the allergy problem, which it won't, you'll be feeling a lot more healthy.

She could also get an allergy test done to see if her cold symptoms are caused by a specific agent. Make an appointment with a general practitioner or a nutritionist, just to be sure there are no other health issues.

I have suffered from allergies all my life too. When I was a kid they were especially terrible. The nasal sprays, over the counter drugs really didn't work all that well... over time, I found Allegra seemed the most helpful as far as drugs go.

I've tried the old fashioned Neti-pot too and it helps temporarily, but word of warning...use distilled water not tap water if you give it a shot. (Tap water can have unwanted particles and you don't want amoebas in your brain or anything :) Also, it tends to make you super sensitive to changes in temperature and to smells for a bit, so you may start sneezing

Honestly, as painful as it is, time and exposure to your allergens reduces your reaction and builds your own body's immunity. I used to be allergic to over 300 things...including cats, dogs, mold, pollen, etc and now it's down to just mold and tree pollen! I'm really happy about that because I've had cats all my life (and one that is 18 years old!) and now I can cuddle with him. I know it sounds cheesy, but it does get better...

I'm with CJBrandstrom. The more you expose yourself to the allergies the better it gets. My boyfriend is fairly allergic to cats but he spends a lot of time at my house and over the course of a few years his reaction to being around the cats has gotten so much better. I also rarely get sick and I think it's because I never really bothered to take medicine when I got sick as a kid. My immunity is all built up.
