Man Arrested for DWI after Seriously Injuring Bicyclist on New Year's Eve

Suffolk County Police arrested a Ronkonkoma man for driving while intoxicated after his vehicle struck and seriously injured a bicyclist, who was crossing against a steady red signal light in Islandia last evening.

Update - January 2, 2016 - Gregory Milau, 26, of Ronkonkoma, has been identified as the bicyclist struck in a motor vehicle crash on Veterans Memorial Highway in Islandia on December 31, 2015.

Islandia, NY - January 1, 2016 - Suffolk County Police arrested a Ronkonkoma man for driving while intoxicated after his vehicle struck and seriously injured a bicyclist, who was crossing against a steady red signal light in Islandia last evening.

Glenn Klimpel was operating a 2008 Honda CRV southbound in the left lane of Veterans Memorial Highway when his vehicle struck a bicyclist who was crossing against a steady red signal light from Suffolk Avenue onto Veterans Memorial Highway at 7:15 p.m.

The bicyclist was transported via Central Islip-Hauppauge Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is listed in serious condition. His identity is being withheld pending notification of family. 

Klimpel, 54, of Ronkonkoma, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and is being held at the Third Precinct. He will be arraigned today at First District Court in Central Islip.

The investigation is continuing and detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Fourth Squad detectives at 631-854-8452.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
